Architectural shingles and standing seam metal roofing are the two best options for most coastal North Carolina homes. Architectural shingles offer the best combination of affordability, wind resistance, and proven performance in our hurricane-prone climate. Metal roofing costs more upfront but lasts two to three times longer and handles extreme winds better than any shingle product on the market.
We install both every week across the Wilmington area, and the right choice depends on your budget, how long you plan to stay in your home, and your tolerance for hurricane season anxiety. Let’s break down every option so you can make an informed decision.
What Makes Coastal NC Different for Roofing?
Before comparing materials, it helps to understand what we’re up against here along the Cape Fear coast. Your roof deals with challenges that inland homeowners never think about:
- Hurricane-force winds: Wilmington sits in a 130+ mph design wind speed zone. Every roofing product we install needs to handle sustained high winds and the debris impacts that come with them.
- Salt air corrosion: If you’re in Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, or anywhere within a few miles of the coast, salt-laden air actively corrodes metals, degrades adhesives, and shortens the life of materials that perform fine 50 miles inland.
- Extreme humidity: Southeastern NC averages 75-80% relative humidity in summer. That moisture drives algae growth on shingles, accelerates wood rot on decking, and makes ventilation critically important.
- UV exposure: Our long, hot summers deliver intense UV radiation that breaks down asphalt-based products faster than in cooler climates.
- Wind-driven rain: Hurricanes and nor’easters push rain horizontally and even upward under roof edges. Your roofing system needs to handle water coming from directions that gravity never intended.
With those factors in mind, here’s how each material stacks up.
Architectural Shingles: The Best All-Around Choice
What They Are
Architectural shingles (also called dimensional or laminate shingles) are the modern standard in asphalt roofing. They’re thicker and heavier than old-school 3-tab shingles, with a layered construction that provides better wind resistance and a more attractive dimensional appearance.
Performance in Coastal NC
- Wind rating: Premium architectural shingles are rated for 110-130 mph winds. Products like GAF Timberline HDZ and CertainTeed Landmark Pro carry 130 mph wind warranties when installed with enhanced nailing.
- Lifespan: 18-25 years in coastal NC conditions. That’s shorter than the “lifetime” warranty suggests — manufacturers define “lifetime” based on ideal conditions, and our coast is anything but ideal.
- Salt air resistance: Good. Asphalt shingles are less affected by salt air than metal products. Algae resistance is more relevant here — look for shingles with copper or zinc granules that resist the black algae streaking common in our humidity.
- Hurricane performance: Strong when properly installed with six-nail patterns and sealed along the starter course. After Hurricane Florence, we saw architectural shingle roofs with proper installation fare much better than those with marginal nailing.
Cost
$350-$550 per square installed (one square = 100 sq ft of roof area). For a typical Wilmington home, that’s $8,000-$16,000 total.
Best For
Most homeowners. If you’re replacing your roof on a reasonable budget and want reliable performance for the next 20 years, architectural shingles are the right call. They’re also the easiest to repair if a storm damages a section.
Standing Seam Metal Roofing: The Premium Choice
What It Is
Standing seam metal roofing uses long panels of steel or aluminum that run from ridge to eave, joined by raised seams that interlock and are fastened with concealed clips. No exposed fasteners means no penetration points for water.
Performance in Coastal NC
- Wind rating: 140-160+ mph depending on the panel profile and fastening system. Metal roofing consistently outperforms every other residential roofing material in hurricane testing.
- Lifespan: 40-70 years in coastal NC. Aluminum panels handle salt air better than steel and can exceed 50 years with minimal maintenance even in oceanfront conditions.
- Salt air resistance: This is where material choice within metal roofing matters enormously. Aluminum standing seam is the gold standard for coastal installations — it doesn’t rust. Galvalume steel performs well within a few miles of the coast but can show corrosion in direct oceanfront exposure. We recommend aluminum for any home within a half-mile of the water.
- Hurricane performance: Exceptional. The interlocking seam design means the wind has no edge to grab and peel. After Hurricane Michael in 2018, standing seam metal roofs were among the only roof types that consistently survived intact in the highest wind zones.
Cost
$700-$1,200 per square installed. For a typical Wilmington home, that’s $16,000-$32,000 total. Aluminum costs more than steel.
Best For
Homeowners who plan to stay in their home long-term, want maximum hurricane protection, or are tired of replacing shingle roofs every 20 years. The higher upfront cost is offset by a lifespan two to three times longer than shingles. Metal roofing also adds to resale value — buyers along the coast specifically seek out metal roof homes.
3-Tab Shingles: The Budget Option
What They Are
The original asphalt shingle — flat, uniform, and thin. 3-tab shingles dominated residential roofing for decades but have largely been replaced by architectural shingles for good reason.
Performance in Coastal NC
- Wind rating: 60-70 mph. This is below our design wind speed, which is why we rarely recommend them.
- Lifespan: 12-18 years in coastal conditions, often less.
- Hurricane performance: Poor. The flat, lightweight design makes them highly susceptible to wind uplift. We’ve replaced countless 3-tab roofs after storms that architectural shingles on neighboring houses survived.
Cost
$250-$350 per square. The lowest upfront cost, but the highest cost per year of service when you factor in the shorter lifespan.
Best For
Honestly? Very few situations in coastal NC. Rental properties where budget is the absolute priority, or short-term holds before selling. For your primary residence on the coast, we strongly recommend spending the extra for architectural shingles at minimum.
Homeowners often ask us, “Can I save money with 3-tab shingles?” You can save money upfront, but you’ll replace the roof years sooner, and you’re more vulnerable to storm damage in between. For a few thousand dollars more, architectural shingles are the better investment every time.
Synthetic Tile and Slate: The Aesthetic Choice
What They Are
Polymer-based products that replicate the look of clay tile, slate, or wood shake without the weight and fragility of the real materials. Brands like DaVinci Roofscapes and Brava Roof Tile are popular options.
Performance in Coastal NC
- Wind rating: 100-110 mph for most products. Decent but not in the same class as metal or premium architectural shingles.
- Lifespan: 30-50 years. UV-stabilized polymers hold up well in our sun exposure.
- Salt air resistance: Excellent. Synthetic materials don’t corrode or degrade from salt exposure.
- Hurricane performance: Mixed. Individual tiles can break or dislodge in extreme winds, but the interlocking installation systems have improved significantly.
Cost
$600-$900 per square. Mid-range between shingles and metal.
Best For
Homes in Wilmington’s historic district or neighborhoods where architectural style matters. If you want the look of slate or tile without the structural reinforcement that real tile requires, synthetics are a good option. We see them in upscale areas like Figure Eight Island and Landfall.
Real Clay and Concrete Tile: Know the Limitations
We’ll mention these for completeness, but real clay and concrete tile are uncommon in coastal NC residential construction for good reasons:
- Extremely heavy — most residential roof structures need reinforcement to handle the load
- Individual tiles can shatter from debris impact during hurricanes
- Underlayment failure beneath tile roofs in our humidity leads to hidden leaks
- High cost for installation and repair
If you love the tile look, synthetic tile gives you the aesthetic without the drawbacks.

Our Recommendation for Wilmington Homeowners
After years of installing and inspecting roofs across the Cape Fear coast, here’s our straightforward advice:
- Best value: Architectural shingles with FORTIFIED installation standards. You get strong wind resistance, reasonable cost, and insurance savings that offset the FORTIFIED premium.
- Best long-term investment: Aluminum standing seam metal roofing. Higher upfront cost, but you may never replace it again. Pairs beautifully with a FORTIFIED designation for maximum insurance savings and storm protection.
- Avoid for primary residences: 3-tab shingles. The small savings aren’t worth the reduced lifespan and storm vulnerability on the coast.
Whatever material you choose, installation quality matters more than brand. A properly installed mid-range product will outperform a premium product with sloppy installation every time. Enhanced nailing patterns, sealed roof decks, proper flashing, and adequate ventilation are what separate a roof that survives a hurricane from one that doesn’t.
